Introduction and summary by Fr Philip

Since 1951 we have been able to spend each Holy Week in our parish church as a community joined in worship and praise. Prior to that for six years the parish community worshipped at our daughter church of St Columba because All Saints has been badly damaged by bombs during the Second World War. What made the Holy Week and Easter of 2020 different is that there was no access to any church for our community in which to worship. The coronavirus pandemic and the necessary lockdown has meant as a community we have stayed home in order to protect the NHS and to save lives. It is important to remember that this was done out of united commitment to work together as a community and a nation to help and support the most vulnerable. It is not easy for Christians not to be able to worship together in the holiest week of the year and thus we might say this a Holy Week like no other. As you parish priest I have tried to stay in contact with you as best as possible, through mailing out 'Holy Week at Home' packs, through contact, and through filmed services and reflections. We have brought these together on this page so that you can review them and use them as aids to prayer. I encourage you to do this and as you do so to pray not just for our church community but for those who are ill and those who work so hard to help them in hospitals, care homes and medical facilities up and down the country. At the end of each email to the congregation I would write 'until we meet again', because I believe we will meet again when this is past, and together we will grieve and mourn, and give thanks as well, just as they did in 1951 when once again they gathered in our beautiful church. We are surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses:

These stones that have echoed
Their praises are holy,
And dear is the ground
Where their feet have once trod;
Yet here they confessed
They were strangers and pilgrims,
And still they were seeking
The city of God.
